Located in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP), in São Gonçalo do Amarante, the Energia Pecém thermoelectric plant is fundamental to the energy system of Ceará and the Northeast. With 720 MW of installed capacity — about half of the state's electricity generation — it guarantees safe and reliable energy for millions of people.
The project began in 2008, as part of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), with an investment of R$ 3 billion (base 2010) and financing from the BNDES and the IDB. The first unit came into operation in December 2012 and the second in May 2013, each with 360 MW.
With an annual capacity of up to 5,500 GWh, the plant can supply a city of approximately 5.6 million inhabitants. Its operation marked the transition of Ceará from importer to exporter of energy.
Currently under the control of Diamante Energia, UTE is undergoing studies to convert to natural gas, reinforcing its strategic role and commitment to a more sustainable matrix.
